Privacy

The short version: we don't ask who you are, we don't keep the address you look up, and we don't sell anything.

Looking up an address

For most New York City addresses we find the districts from public data on our own server, so the address goes nowhere. When that fails, or for addresses elsewhere, the address is sent to a public government geocoding service to find its districts. Either way the address is then discarded; only the district numbers travel to the page you are viewing.

To spare those public services from repeat lookups, we keep a cache of which districts a given address falls in. The cache key is a one-way salted hash of the address, the value is district numbers and a map point, and an entry carries only the date it was cached so it can expire after six months. Nothing links an entry to a person or a visit. We do not store addresses in readable form.

Correction reports

A report stores what you wrote, which topic you picked, the page you pointed at if any, the time, and a salted one-way hash of your network address used only to limit abuse. We remove email addresses and phone numbers from the text. Reports are also sent to our mailbox. We do not ask for a name or contact details and cannot reply.

Server logs

Like most websites, the servers and network providers that deliver this site keep standard access logs, which include network addresses, for security and operations. We do not use them to identify visitors.

No tracking

No advertising, no analytics trackers, no third-party scripts, no cookies for tracking. We may count page views in aggregate from server logs.

Service providers

The site runs on hosting and network providers who process traffic on our behalf under their own privacy policies. Vote and district data comes from government sources listed on the Sources page.
